Educating Rita by Willy Russell ââ¬Å" How do the characters of Frank and Rita change throughout the play and what is Russellââ¬â¢s purpose of using the technique?â⬠Educating Rita is a play written by Willy Russell who was born in Liverpool, Whiston. ââ¬Å"I really donââ¬â¢t want to write plays which are resigned, menopausal, despairing and whining. I donââ¬â¢t want to use any medium as a platform for displaying the smallness and hopelessness of man.â⬠Willy Russell wrote Educating Rita as a comedy, he wanted to write a funny play to be watched and not to be studied. Coming from a working class family and society, he witnessed a deep injustice in the way lower classes were treated. Even though people who were working class had wonderful qualities, they were often regarded as worthless. In Educating Rita there are two classes, the lower class that is represented by Rita and the upper class represented by Frank. Russell reveals that although both characters come from different classes, they can both learn from each other. In this play there are only two characters. Although many other people are important to the play, Rita and Frank are the central characters. Rita is a 26-year-old woman who has decided to take a course in English Literature at the Open University. Frank, who is in his early fifties, is Ritaââ¬â¢s tutor at the University. From the first opening scene we immediately see that Frank has a drinking problem, as he hides bottles of alcohol behind books in his study. Frank is in his study on the phone to his girlfriend to whom we can see he does not like much ââ¬Å"â⬠¦yes just pop off and put your head in the ovenâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ At the start of Act 1 Frank shows that he is uninterested in Rita, prejudges her and thinks that she ... ... one she leaves behind. She does pay a price, by leaving Danny and not having a baby yet, she gets what she wantââ¬â¢s, an education. In the play, education is portrayed as a game when they are in the university ââ¬â not going there for the need of an education but to acquire the lifestyle that an ââ¬Ëeducatedââ¬â¢ person would so. Frank doesnââ¬â¢t know this game, but Rita does and at the end of the play she realises what it has done to her. At the beginning of the play she is an ââ¬Ëuneducatedââ¬â¢ woman, who knows little about academic things but has a lot of experience about life. She doesnââ¬â¢t value the knowledge which she already has much. She throws away her old life and what she gets back - Frank thinks- is much less valuable. But to Rita, education is a way out of mediocrity into a superior lifestyle. The tragedy is that she pays for it by becoming a different person.

Nicolette Larson was loading the dishwasher with her husband, Kevin, and telling him about the first meeting of the Manchester United Tournament Organizing Committee. Nicolette, a self confessed ââ¬Å"soccer mom,â⬠had been elected tournament director and was responsible for organizing the clubs first summer tournament. Manchester United Soccer Club (MUSC) located in Manchester, New Hampshire was formed in 1992 as a way of bringing recreational players to a higher level of competition and preparing them for the State Olympic Development Program and/or high school teams. The club currently has 24 boys and aids (ranging in age from under 9 to 16) on teams affiliated with the Hampshire Soccer Association and the Granite State Girls Soccer League. The clubââ¬â¢s board of directors decided in the fall to sponsor a summer invitational soccer tournament to generate revenue. Given the boom in youth soccer, hosting summer tournaments has become a popular method for raising funds. MUSC teams regularly compete in three to four tournaments each summer at different locales in New England. These tournaments have been reported to generate between $50,000 and S70,000 for the host club. MUSC needs additional revenue to refurbish and expand the number of soccer fields at the Rock Rimmon soccer complex. Funds would also be used to augment the club's scholarship program, which provides financial aid to players who cannot afford the $450 annual club dues. Nicolette gave her husband a blow-by-blow account of what transpired during the first tournament committee meeting that night. She started the meeting by having everyone introduce themselves and by proclaiming how excited she was that the club was going to sponsor its own tournament. She then suggested that the committee brainstorm what needed to be done to pull off the event; she would record their ideas on a flipchart. What emerged was a free-for-all of ideas and suggestions. One member immediately stressed the importance of having qualified referees and spent several minutes describing in detail how his son's team was robbed in a poorly officiated championship game. This was followed by other stories of injustice on the soccer field. Another member suggested that they needed to quickly contact the local colleges to see if they could use their Fields. The committee spent more than 30 minutes talking about how they should screen teams and how much they should charge as an entry fee. An argument broke out over whether they should reward the winning teams in each age bracket with medals or trophies. Many members felt that medals were too cheap, while others thought the trophies would be too expensive. Someone suggested that they seek local corporate sponsors to help fund the tournament. The proposed sale or tournament T-shirts and sweatshirts was followed by a general critique of the different shirts parents had acquired at different tournaments. One member advocated that they recruit an artist he knew to develop a unique silk-screen design for the tournament. The meeting adjourned 30 minutes late with only half of the members remaining until the end. Nicolette drove home with seven sheets of ideas and a headache. As Kevin poured a glass of water for the two aspirin Nicolette was about to take, he tried to comfort her by saying that organizing this tournament would be a big project not unlike the projects he works on at his engineering and design firm. He offered to sit down with her the next night and help her plan the project. He suggested that the first thing they needed to do was to develop a WBS for the project. A. Make a list of the major deliverables for the project and use them to develop a draft of the work breakdown structure for the tournament that contains at least three levels of detail. ââ¬ÅLetter from Birmingham Jailââ¬Â Literary Analys Essay
Martin Luther King, Jr.ââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail,â⬠was written in 1963; during the time African Americans were fighting for equality among races. We can tell this by the vocabulary used in his writing such as ââ¬Å"Negro,â⬠which was used at one time, and is no longer considered, ââ¬Å"politically correct. ââ¬Å" The purpose for the letter is that Martin Luther King Jr. was trying to convince the white clergymen that him and his ââ¬Å"Peopleââ¬â¢sâ⬠actions were completely unnecessary for the situation. When doing this, he uses critical and persuasive tones to try to influence the reader to agree with him. Martin Luther King Jr. provides a valid argument using logos, pathos, and ethos throughout his letter. The use of comparison in Dr. Kingââ¬â¢s letter makes the African Americanââ¬â¢s trouble of segregation seems, just about holy. He compares being arrested for his peaceful but illegal actions to the crucifixion of Jesus for his ââ¬Å"unique God-consciousness and never-ceasing devotion.â⬠Martin Luther King, Jr. ties himself to God by suggesting that above constitutional rights and legal laws are God-given rights, and these rights are the ones that he and his followers are supporting. He says that just laws, are laws that ââ¬Å"Square with moral law or the law of God.â⬠King resumes this religious association in his last paragraph, where he mentions blacks who conduct sit-ins as ââ¬Å"children of Godâ⬠who stand up for ââ¬Å"the most scare Values in our Judeo-Christian heritage.â⬠These similarities make Dr. King and his men seem to be fighting an almost heavenly cause, one that has the support of God and of history. King also uses his voice through writing to educe emotion. Aside from his associations to God and Socrates, which may help religious readers better connect to his message, Martin Luther King Jr., writes about the emotional suffering that blacks went through due to segregation and prejudice. He replies to whites telling blacks to ââ¬Å"waitâ⬠for desegregation by bringing up several murders committed by whites on blacks, including lynching, drowning, and police cruelty. He continues on these emotional out looks by expressing how children begin to become disturbed by segregation when they realize that they are considered lesser to whites. King uses definite examples, such as a daughter who finds out that she canââ¬â¢t visit an amusement park because it is closed to colored children, and a son who asks, ââ¬Å"Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?â⬠He shows how the build-up of these thoughts in black children eventually turn into hatred for whites when he says, ââ¬Å"There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into the abyss of despair.â⬠All of these statements help the reader see just how blacks were disturbed beyond decency and rightfulness. Kingââ¬â¢s use of emotional writing helps readers develop sympathy for the segregated. Martin Luther King Jr., is trying to tell the white clergymen what he feels they are doing wrong. He uses so many different emotional pulls at the attempt to grab their attention. He does a great job of doing this through referring to the bible and about children. Through the use of rhetorical strategies, Martin Luther King Jr. countered the clergymenââ¬â¢s argument. He also got their attention due to his unique strategy of directly addressing his readers, the clergymen, to create the base of his argument. From there, King is able to shatter his opponentââ¬â¢s claims. This way of arguing allowed King to present his argument with more authority to achieve his goal: justify the reasons for nonviolent demonstrations against segregation. I feel as if Martin Luther Kingââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Letter From Birmingham Jailâ⬠had a great impact on the rights of black people during his time. The fact that is still read today proves itââ¬â¢s a great piece of writing. From my point of view he was in the right with every opinion he expressed; I honestly donââ¬â¢t see how you couldnââ¬â¢t agree with him. His writing is not only changing the world, but is entertainment to read. In the closing of his letter he says ââ¬Å"I hope this letter finds you strong in the faith. I also hope that the circumstances will soon make it possible for me to meet each of you, not as integrationist or a civil-rights leader but as a fellow clergymen and a Christian brother.â⬠This is the hope of many people; we are getting closer each day to having his hope become a reality. I believe this letter had a huge impact on many peopleââ¬â¢s lives, and will continue to change the world.

Mary, What a day so far! It started off with Kathy calling at 6 a.m. à She is a real mess. Kathy wants to come home. She hates it there and wants out. She realizes that she needs to take care of Joe, but she is falling apart. Then, at 11 a.m., I get a call that Dawn needs fluids and her immune system is worse than I thought. I am thankful that the bleeding stopped. Next, I asked to talk to Dawn. She was crying and falling apart. à She asked if she just can go live in her house. That way she could give you and Don your home back. She is very concerned that she is causing too much stress on your relationship with Don. Kathy is miserable and so is Dawn. Dawn doesn`t want to make anyoneââ¬â¢s life unhappy, but I can`t let her live on her own yet. She would die if left alone. I doubt she would make it through a week. Iââ¬â¢m not sure what to do.à She has asked me not to ask you to do anything extra. I can`t do that either.à à I don`t want her suffering additional pain because you need to remove the fluids. You must do the therapy three times a week so she can stay dry. Being wet right now will only cause infections. Please play the game as well.à I really do feel this can help her brain get stronger. You will also need to check on her every hour or hour and a half to be certain to treat fevers and chills when she is sleeping. I have tried to ask you for as little as possible with Dawnââ¬â¢s care these days because I understand the problems between you and Don. Dawn tries to pull her weight around the house, with cleaning, cooking, and taking good care of you, but she feels she is not doing enough.à She is ery concerned about the stress she is causing for you and Don. However, I told Dawn the husband-wife thing is not her problem to figure out. As adults, we need to figure that out, not the kids. The kids are the sick ones, yet we sometime make them feel really badly even when that is not what we are trying to do. For example, when Kathy and I were in Madison, we both wanted to take care of Joe, but we also complained about the small amount of time we spent together. Yes, we couldn`t sleep together, but I made no effort to spend time with Kathy before her bed time and she didn`t make any effort to spend time with me. à So, what I am trying to say here is that we have to make time to spend with our spouses. No, we canââ¬â¢t be together every night, but some nights we can go and get our spouses and spend that time together before bedtime. I have had time to think about this and I was just as much at fault as Kathy was for us not spending time together. My advice is that you learn from my mistakes. Some night, at 10 p.m., go get Don and spend some time together while Dawn watches her soaps. Just do like Kathy does, keep going to bed on time. Yes, it not the same as sleeping together, but it the time together that counts while taking care of this sick kid of ours. Trying do this two or three times a week. Iââ¬â¢m not sure how else to help you guys out. I could watch Dawn during spring break, but I think you told me that you already bought tickets. I am not sure what to do to help you guys. Everyone seems very miserable. Please tell me what I can do. I don`t want Dawn stopping treatment in an effort to give you your life back. Dawn has been seriously talking about this for awhile now. Gopnikââ¬â¢s growing up years includes having a secular family. Gopnik grew up in a deeply religious environment. Wood grew up in a Christian family environment. Both Gopnik and Wood accept the Atheism concept. Atheism disavows the presence of a God who created the universe. Both Wood and Gopnik espouse the unbridled democratic exercise of different religious beliefs and the same beliefsââ¬â¢ related experiences, indicating Christianity concepts can thrive well in a secular atheist environment.
